- Jacques de Molay and
the last days of the Order
“Non nobis Domine, non nobis sed nomini tuo da gloriam”
(Not unto us Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name the glory,)
Jacques de Molay, the 23rd Grand Master of the Order of the Temple, is also the last one.
After the conspiracy and the attack against the Order by the king of France, Philip IV "Le Bel",
on Friday 13 October 1307, a series of sham trials followed, in which Jacques de Molay was not spared either.
He will, along with 3 other Knights Templar, be put to death at the stake, on 18 March 1314 in Paris.
In this lecture I try to sketch a picture of the person who was Jacques de Molay, and why he made certain decisions, decisions that did not always turn out to be logical.
